Sorry, wrong ocean for aptasia......we do have many look alike anemones in the gulf of Mexico, but no aptasia...


and crabs?...crabs will be crabs...remember, this is the ocean, and everything eats everything else!

Rule of thumb is, if he does something you do not like, he needs a new home, porcelain crabs are not a threat....

the best way and cheapest is a glass coke bottle, drop some food in the bottom lean against rock at night and she will slide down in to get food and not be able to get out. your crab is probably some type of mud crab and will eventually eat everything it can get a hold of. good luck.

OH MAN! so today i received the rest of my live rock from tbs, and it is soooooooooooo awesome

so awesome i spent the next 6 hours hopping around my tank getting everything in there haha!

so needless to say i took tons of pictures (but my camera broke again shortly), out of all the creatures i now have:
- bunch of snails
- peppermint shrimp
- 2 sea stars (1 serpent, 1 other kind)
- sea cucumber
- tiny little goby (white with black stripes, super adorable)
- anemone!!!! maybe even 2 because i'm not sure what the other thing is....
- 3 gorgonians
- bunch of sponges
- blue leg hermit crabs
i'm sure i forgot some, but this stuff rocks so check it out

Holy crap that's an amazing catch on the LR!!! I can't believe they shipped all that stuff with it!

Looks like you are ready for some livestock, give it a week incase you get any cycle from the LR shipment, then I wanna see some fish in there!

Is funny how everything looks so BIG.....in your nano.....when I packed your critters, I went for the smallest I had, as that is appropriate for your size tank...the common starfish is maybe an inch...but looks huge in your pics!

And a word to the wise, in such a small tank with so much life...be on the lookout for any changes..in anything....and don't hesitate to ditch something that may not make it,...but a common mistake with folks...is like the snails after shipping, can take days for them to get up and go...as in cukes also...slow to start moving..and condys, shrink up and down...all normal..but that behavior that alarms folks....can't tell you how many folks have tossed live critters....under 'suspicion' .....so before you toss...ask....but do act accordingly in the interest of the rest of the critters in your tank....small tanks are unforgiving....larger tanks...have a much wider margin for error...and not so crucial as your tank......keep me posted!

Same critter I think you are referring to....like the stone crab we eat the claws from down here?

and your trap idea works best....starve the tank a little, a shot glass and some shrimp....caught...and they don't bite, you can just reach in and grab crabs if you get the opportunity....


defiantly one of the big bad and ugly crab that occurs in Florida...but do not see many on the aquacultured rock, as they are a burrowing critter.....and the stone crabbers down here fish the heck out of them.......but there are plenty of other types of crabs on the rock...the good..the bad..the ugly....and to be expected, as when you take their condos...your are going to get the residents, no matter what they are...lol

I have seen over the years..a very small...never more that 1/2 inch crab ...usually 3/8 inch....that is jet black colored one come in on the rock and hop out while I am unloading..., that looks exactly like a stone crab.....same body style and claws...an almost iridescent black color...all over..unlike a mud crab..

hey guys!!! so i think my tank is going through a mini cycle ever since i put all of the new stuff in, i'm definitely worried for the anemone....

yesterday my params were:
ammonia: .25 ppm
no2: 1 ppm
no3: 80 ppm

i decided that is a lot of nitrates and did about a gallon and a half water change.

today the params are:
ammonia: ~0 ppm
no2: 1 ppm
no3: 80 ppm

the nitrates are really high again and i'd really like for everyone to survive. going to go get some more chaeto and hopefully receive my little light for the fuge today...

should i just keep doing water changes every day until the nitrates go down??

I'm not an anemone expert, but most inverts don't do well with high nitrates. Given your setup, the only way to drop them is through water changes. Do a 25% water change Make sure the new water's salinity, PH and temp match your tank's water. Then retest your nitrates. You may want to have a trusted LFS retest them if they use a different test kit.
BTW, your nano is looking great.

so i bought one of these led's for my bc14, and it gets reeeeally hot and keeps my tank above 82, even when the lights are off. should i just put it on the outside by the window where you can see the chaeto? anyone else have this problem?

The link to light shows it as a submersible only. You put it outside and it will break. It needs the water to keep it cool.

+1 on the fan. A little clip on blowing through the back vents. I bet it would drop it a couple of degrees.

no.... my lfs sucks and told me that they have 1.020 water which would totally be cool if it wasn't actually 1.016. soooo gay, now i can't really do water changes with it, i think i'm gonna have to buy salt and go to the store with my refractometer. class and work during their open hours sucks too . at least my nitrates are pretty consistent at 80 ppm and seem to not go higher, thank goodness.

buuut i think the anemone almost died because of the high temp due to the fuge light(it filled right back up once the temp went down), so now i'm trying to figure out what light to buy to put outside the tank in the little window...

any suggestions?

Sorry, I'm not sure what you can use for lighting a hang on fuge. I have a sump, so I just use a clip on light with a daylight CFL bulb.

That light is a Halogen, not an LED. That would indeed be a lot hotter than I would want to put in my tank. I'd try to rig a Compact flourescent bulb up to grow the algae. They won't get near as hot. You'll have to be careful about placement. Or get a definate LED set up.

Looking good, don't fret or panic. After an exhausting night like that with the temp too high, your anemone may do good with a feeding. If you have silversides (small white fish from the grocery store) then you may want to feed him a small chunk of fish and see if he perks up.

I changed out my hood on the Aqua Pod and bought a Nova Extreme. So far my temp has only rose maybe 1 degree. I have glass on the top of it, and it helps keep the temp consistant.
