So, today is the day to buy a cheap windows 7 laptop..
I'm Mac, but not being particularly versed in the nuances of running windows stuff on a Mac, I thought I'd simply buy a laptop to control the mitras and perhaps a profilux down the road.. It'll simply be my 'fish' computer.. Is there anything I should be looking for in a cheap laptop? I assume any new windows 7 laptop should have enough memory and speed to to the job? Thanks for any advice!

Actually, should I get windows 7 instead of 8?
Can I assume this will make it simpler? I can get an Acer 10" notebook with windows 8 for $231.... But will I be better off with windows 7? Thanks again!

I did the same thing you want to do. Based on the advice I received from an IT person, I went with Windows 7. It is my understanding that there are many issues with Windows 8, and quite frankly, I am not well versed in computer technology so I took what I thought was the path of least resistance.
Hopefully, you will receive responses from folks who have actual experience with Windows 8. |

Run from Windows8 right now unless you're very "Tech Savvy" and want to "tinker" and such.
Honestly our company is still working with WindowsXP Pro and love it. I just installed 2 new workstations and made them both XP Pro just for better driver support and compatibility with older in-house hardware. My personal computer(s) are Windows7 but I'm staying FAR away from Win8 for now. |

Matt if you have a computer repair shop close by you may get a refurbished unit even cheaper. There's one here in town that will sell "off lease" units for about 1/3 what you can buy a cheap one at a retail outlet. Best of all they have WindowsXP and Windows7 available and a warranty (all be it just a few months).

Anyone got photos of how they are mounted above a rimless tank? I'm in the preplanning stage and will need some sleek wall brackets or the like.

PS, have you kept SPS for long term under Metal Halides before? If so, how do you rate the Mitras compared to MH in terms of SPS colour?

Hi sahin. I don't test nitrate but my po4 is usually around 0.01-0.02 on hanna
I've had mh yup, giesemann fixture with Phoenix globes, I think the settings I'm using are pretty close to that setup. Sps are looking the best I've had under these led than any other lighting so far. Fingers crossed they hold

@rodneyri, spectacular! 2 months and everything looks great, finally some ammo to battle the anti LED crowd. As I expected, LED only needed the right fixture build and software to be successful.

Rodney thank you for the updated pics. You are the "anchor" as the first one to get the Mitras, get it in service, and offering periodic pictures of your spectacular reef.

How good is it for a 30" deep tank as far as penetration for SPS on or close to the sandbed? Is one good enough for a 24"x24"x30" cube?
Thanks |
