That is exaclty what happened, it started to melt away, loosing its color, split into piece and pull off the rock. I tossed it as I didn'tt know what it can do to a tank. Too bad as it was a beautifuil little coral to behold! It's the first coarl loss I've had and the first one to look worse in my tank than the LFS's tank...

Very interesting that other's are having Yuma problems.

apparently its called "brown jelly rot" and is a result of wild blue yumas in the home aquaria.

aquacultured ones do great, but wild caught yumas seem to always perrish.

i got this small rock with like 6 beautiful yumas last weekend.i was totally stoked cause it was only $25 bucks.....................
(that might have been the fist sign right there, holliday spirit my.......)

then on tues. the first one melted, and last night i had lost a second.

i just about have to throw the rock away now.

So far, so good! All inhabitants are eating and acting normal, as far as my untrained eye can see!

Ca is still over 500...
Mag is normal at 1280
The new fluctuating param is alk which has gone from averaging around 7+ dKH to now 10+ dKh... I did buffer it up alittle but that was over a week ago and not nearly enough to cause to jump that far, I think I put in 2 cap fulls.

The cleaner shrimp is just desperate to clean every fish every time they swim buy... must clean, must clean, must clean, must clean, must clean, must clean, must clean...

Sorry if this is off topic...

On your closed loop intake, the intake screen...where did you get that fitting. It looks very nice, as apposed to the long skinny bulkhead type. It seems to stay flat to the back of the tank and look more pleasing

As a sales guy, I have to travel... Hasn't been an issua as I'm usually ony gone a night or two. The wife is well trained on feeding. Anyway, I came back last night to see that my Dragon Goby is looking bad. Tattered fins, cloudy eyes. He was belly up this morning. What ever it was, it happened fast!

Could be that my last addition, the Flame Angel, came into the tank with Ich. I did not QT him. Lesson learned! My cleaner shrimp seems to be removing the ich. There are times when there are little white dots on the angel, then the next day, they are gone...

My Chromis have not shown a single sign of ich.

The other new issues that one of my Zoa colonies has been closed for 5 days now. All other zoas are open and extended. Not sure what's going on...

Here are the params as of yesterday afternoon:
Ammonnia: 0
Trites: 0
Trates: trace
Phos: 0
Ph: 8
Alk: 8 dKh
Mag 1350ppm
Calc: 500+
SG: 1.025

The only new thing is a canister filter that I added to help pull out the sediment the goby was kicking up. I cleaned it first...

Sorry to here about the goby. Usually they dont get ich...as far as I can tell when I had it in my tank my goby never showed any signs. Are you dosing anything at all right now? The only thing I can see is the alk could be a little higher. And calcium could be a lower. Calcium isnt lethal to animals. What are you temp parameters. I doubt the canister could have caused the issue unless it was kicking out toxic stuff in the water. Are any other fish showing any stress?

Temp range is 79.5 to 81. The only thing I dose is Alk and Mag, and very sparingly at that. How does one lower calc?

I never noticed any cysts on the goby at all. He just suddenly started looking bad, fins and eyes. He was eating just fine on Saturday. I did notice a little clouding of the eyes late last week though.

No other signs of stress. I've only got a Flame Angel and 4 little blue/green chromis in there. They all have ferocious appetites!

I'll not add anything for a while now... at least I'll try not to add anything for a while, fishwise at least.

I'm running our of room for corals anyway as I just added a nice juicy Fox Coral!

The urchin in just a spinny urchin. I have no idea what's it's actual name is... He's very cool though!

I just noticed that I have almost microscopic starfish on the glass of my tank. They look like really, really small white brittle stars.

Pod population is healthy and I now see them on the glass during the day. The flame Angel is constantly pecking at the rocks doing his part of pod population control.

Hey LH - nrb told me those were fanworms when I had them a while back. If I mag-floated them off the glass they spun around like tops in the water column. That was fun but thankfully they disappeared.

There are two ways to get Calcium levels down. One is by naturally letting it drop over time. The other is by water changes. Based on my research, and that of some of the "older" reefers, low ph and alk is a sign of high calcium. Basically buffer your alk up to 10 or 11 and calcium will drop slowly over a period of weeks in a much more natural fashion. If you let those "star fish" sit on your glass too long they are an absolute pain to get off. They grow up to be tiny fan worms. Take a look at melevs identification site to get a good picture of them.

... well, it's been a while. Time for some updated pics which where unfortunately taken after a recent water change, some sediment is still suspended. I had stopped running a filter sock on the return while the pod population was able to settle in. I recently started running it 24/7 again.

Below is a yet to be ID'd LPS of some sort., one of the 'phylias' maybe... It's got a single ring of tentacles and 12 individual mouths!

I just put this in the tank a few minutes before snapping the shot. I got it while I had the kids with me, yet another 'to ID piece'!

The new goby.

Here's a fox coral I got about 12 days ago.

The fish closet with fully functioning fuge abounding with little critters

I tapped into the closed loop plumbing so I could do fish closet side/garage water changes. This mod means no water in the house, ever. I can also change 5+ gallons every Sat morning in about 15 minute including skimmer cleaning and maintenance.

and finally some tank shots. I pushed some rock around to better utilize space,so I have more real estate for additional corals!

Right Side

The left side with the prominent hair aglea rock... I've been overfeeding, rookie mistake.
