Rumors abound and I wouldnt be one to pass them on. But, the last time someone in our local fish comunity mentoned them it was during a conversation about importing corals from areas that frown upon that kind of activity. I havent heard about or seen a new coral from them locally in a couple of years. I do have a few that came from their site. They were always wild colonies and we never had any problem keeping them alive long term. Several frags from their wild colonies have proven to be some of my most hardy individuals.

The information I found online doing a google says they were bought out and no longer in business, although I don't know how accurate it is.

I actually bought a couple of frags back then.
Here are a couple of pics.

And this is the other one I just lost a couple of weeks ago. On the upper right.

thanks for info on reefermadness, I had heard people talk about them before but never could find them.

I have a frag that looks much like the first one shown, the colors are not quite as intense but it is still getting established so may be it's the same (hoping). If I might ask how did you lose the other one?

You got me. It was easily 10 inches across and rtn'd in 2 days. I beleive my salinity was low. Stupid mistake on my part for not checking. Good news is I got a cople of frags before it went and are now in friends tanks.

The reason I ask I'm struggling with STN, think I know what started it but don't know why it keeps affecting new corals even after the ones that survived have started growing again. Sps seem to be a finicky bunch, I been trying to get a handle on all the variables.

Seems to be a fast grower but very sensitive coral. Eventually I lost my frag in a crash.
I read many cases of specimen lost on this one.

I have that frag (received from Reefermadness) and it's proven to be very hardy and has survived a few disasters. It's now a nice sized colony with great color and fantastic polyp extension.

BTW, it's hard to believe how many folks nowadays don't know who reefermadness was. They use to be THE place to get wild colonies. Times have changed...

Yup, RM was a great resource for unusual coral and Chris was very passionate about his stock, I miss that place. I still have a Clathrata that I got from them like six years ago.

Hello All,
I could not help but to say hello and set the record straight for what had happened to Reefer Madness and where our staff has been. It has been hard to keep a silent tongue for these past couple of years, but now I feel the time is right and all of our old loyal clients should know a bit of what had transpired to make the demise of Reefer Madness an unfortunate reality.
After working and training under Chris Turnier who had left for Fiji to work for Walt Smith International in March of '07, I had taken over as GM at the best Coral shop in the U.S. Chris remained a consultant and assisted me through my new trials as the new leader of RMI. Many did not even know this as it was such a smooth transition and I strived to keep the same feel and look that put us on the map.
In November of '07, RMI was purchased by new owners and big promises were made that where quickly broken. Never-the-less myself and the rest of my staff pushed through and worked with what we had been given to us by the new owners.
To sum up this drama, Reefer quickly fell by new ownership antics and neglection of the understanding of this hobby as well as our unique business practice and I was let go. My staff resigned the same day as they were aware of the malpractice and unethical morals that had been installed despite my requests to make sure these particular actions did not happen by the new owners.
After this unfortunate situation had happened I spent the next 3 months in the South Pacific Ocean between Fiji and Tonga diving and re-blooming my love for this hobby and business.
Since March of '09 I have been at Blue Zoo Aquatics. I was brought in to open a department we call Collector's Choice. My main goal was to recreate Reefer Madness and bring in all the Eye Candy Coral that we did a RMI as WYSIWYG. Almost a year running now Collector's Choice is starting to bring back all of our old loyal Clients from Reefer.
Through an odd chain of events, Blue Zoo was able to purchase all the old RMI equipment and I am happy to say I am back with my Holding tanks and Systems!
After all this, one thing is for certain, there will never be another company like Reefer Madness. However, I have been able to build Collector's Choice to be a close second and would like to see you all give us a chance. We do bring in the same Famous Corals that we did at RMI, only now to have more resources at our finger tips.
I thank all of you for your support and kind words about the late RMI!
R.I.P Monty
Sincerely,
Kris Wray

Thanks for the post Kris.

Interestingly enough, RM was the store that got me hooked on SPS...even though I never had a chance to order from RM.

As a new reefer, I didn't understand the allure of those colored sticks. One day, I started looking through all the pictures on RM website. I was so struck by the variety of colors, and I knew I had to learn more about these corals. By the time I had researched, and gotten my tank, as well as my skills to the point that I was ready for some acros, RM was gone. Too bad the place that got me hooked, never got any of my cash.

I've always heard good things about blue zoo, I'll have to check out the colleector's choice.
