Hi guys, I just got turned on to this skimmer by GSM guy. I am starting to buy equipment for a 300 gallon new build. Is there some sort of overflow drain if the skimmer cup gets too full? i.e. - if I go on vacation for a week?

there is a drain in the cup, yes ... so it would always drain into another container. I have it hooked to a 5gallon bucket/jug.

The skimmer comes with a cap for the drain, so you don't have to use the drain if you don't want.

Jeremy; do you have any info on this?
The skimmer is ozone safe, but as with any other product that is considered to be ozone safe the quality will degrade at a faster rate than what it would if you were not using ozone.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Up until today, I was sold on an MRC MR-3R, which would have come in at the $800 range. I've rea about pump size, heat etc. and just feel that Becketts is "old technology".

Jeremy - two questions:

1) If I pump from my sump straight up to a 40" height, then discharge straight down ( assuming I size the feed pump correctly) will I have a problem? As posted by JenDub

2) If I discharge to a sump that has varying water levels - will that cause problems?

Somehow I need to logically justify $500 (to my wife), and Wiz - better looking corals is a big start. I want more bio-load, fish etc., but have never felt totally comfy with the G3.

I run my reeflo 250 at about 40" off the ground, above the sumps. I pump up out of the sump, and drain right back down. When the power goes off, the unit does back siphon. However, I can't figure for the life of me what the actual problem with this is, as I don't see it to be an issue at all for me? The skimmer only drains down to the black box though, so when the pumps would kick back on the recirc sequence pump will not run dry at all.

Discharging to a sump with varying water levels will not be an issue at all. The water level of any sump you are feeding from or to, does not make a difference in the level of the skimmer since it's a recirc.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jeremy - Also, what is the footprint?

Web literature doesn't show it.

I am very interested in a top skimmer.Would this be overkill for a 90 gallon reef ready with a 75 gallon sump.

Just ordered mine for a 300. Did you see the totm? I read that, and was afraid they would sell out immediately!

personally, i think yes, it would be overkill. I personally would wait till the smaller model will be released, or if you don't have the time to wait, look into other alternatives, such as the mubble masters, small bubblekings, euroreef, deltecs etc..etc... there are plenty out there to choose from, but IMHO i think this skimmer would be overkill for that size tank.

i think one of the bubble king mini would be a better fit the small version of this skimmer will still be on the big side for your tank..

If you have a 16" x 21" area you would be just fine, with a little room to play.

We hope to have the smaller version ready in about 4-6 weeks at the latest.

We will also have the prototype of the larger version at MACNA. This is one huge skimmer, that is ran off of a Hammerhead needlewheel pump.

I'm torn on this one, what's the recommend on a 220 (300 gallon total system) medium stocked mixed reef setup (heavier on LPS/SPS than soft)? The current version or the coming smaller version?

Just go with ther larger version and have room to upgrade if you so desire in the future. I personally wouldn't put the 250 on anything smaller than 180-200 gallons. Anything over that and I think you would be fine, all the way up to 1000 - 1200 gallons depending on stock load.

cant wait to see that giant prototype

in fact you should hook it up to a portapottie and make a "hands on" display.

Jeremy and others,
If gravity feeding one of these is not an option in my set up, what gph pump would be needed to feed one of these monsters?

I just bought one today and plan to hook it up tomorrow and noticed that some of u appear to have placed the long pipe after the T, but some of the pics(like the one on page 1 of this thread) show the long pipe coming up from the skimmer body going into the bottom of the T. Is there a right or wrong way to do this? Would be nice if the pieces were marked with letters to correspond with the directions.

Ben,
I went through all of the pics in this thread, reviewed my instruction page that came witht eh skimmer, and looked at the assembled pic on the first page, as well as the drawing picture in post #1.

I have the short piece coming up into the T, and the long piece going horizontally.
I believe "pwhitby" has it vice versa ... In the assembled picture of post # 1 (demo photo) it shows the long piece going from skimmer to T, and the short one horizontally.

In my drawing, and in the drawing in Post #1, it seems that the short piece comes up from skimmer to T.

If i remember correctly, I tried running the skimmer with the long piece coming up, but it brought the water too far up for my liking. that is IF i remember correctly.

I'd be interested in finding out as well.

lol ... i wouldn't necessarily call them "instructions" ... i'd call them ... "reference pictures" ;-) hahaha.

that really is the worst part of this skimmer .. the lack of instructions ... BUT .. it's so easy to get this unit installed, i did it in ~15 minutes i think.
