Well why'd they tease us with it then? Seems like the angle of the fins would have been one of the first things they would have decided on. I would think once that was pretty well set in the early stages, they would have tested it real quick, decided it didn't work, and not teased the public with the possibility.

Or was it that at some recent point, they decided to switch from straight paddle-wheel style fins which could have been reversible (though probably less efficient at moving water as the slanted fins) to the current configuration? I'm still interested, but decidedly less so.

If it's so easy to move around, maybe I'll just slide it to the other side once a day.

They probably want to be able to bring both versions out. Bring out a singular direction model first. When those sales start to stall bring out version 2.0 that run in both directions for a big sales boost. All about the Benjamins...

Or technical issues. I don't see an obvious way to reverse the flow on this unit given the impeller design.

If this thing works as advertised with reasonable life/durability, it will be a home run of a product even without reversable flow.

I'm curious about final pricing on the single impeller units. With the amount of flow the current prototypes produce, the single impeller units will probably work well in tanks up to 120ish gallons.

The in tank footprint of these units looks pretty good for the amount of flow they generate.

I don't think it's such a big deal. Just drop the flow down overnight and speed it back up during the day. The lower flow overnight should allow the corals a reprieve from the unidirectional flow right?

The point is it only ever gets strong flow from one direction, which can cause uneven growth. If it truly can't be reversed, I'll move the whole unit to the other side every day or so.

That looks crazy strong on 11. What are the dimensions of your tank? And have you tried running it vertically? My plan is to put one vertically in the corner facing away from my corner overflow, hopefully resulting in a circular gyre that puts the water back at the overflow.

You turned it up to 11!

Man, the fish were holding on for dear life. Insane.

I was so happy when I realized that 11 was the maximum

You can see on the last two settings where water started peaking over the front of the tank, the side of the tank (which the Gyre faces) was even worse!

I kinda regret doing that test now, though, as my H. magnifica decided to start walking a bit. Still on the same rock, but now it's on the front of it and is touching the zoas/palys on it and the gorgonian on the arm of the rock. :/

Maxspect Riptide Tank:

Friends will come by and see your tank and ask why all the corals are growing left like your whole tank is crooked. Lol

Looks to me like that anemone is getting hit from all directions.
You should probably hold off on placing your foot in your mouth with speculative comments until the product is actually released and you ummm.... maybe try one for yourself.
Just a thought.

That video looks awesome !. So do you need to manually change the power or can you program the controller to ramp up and down or pulse etc ?

The controller on the prototype units is basic, has speed control and a pulsing mode, but pulsing is not the goal with this style pump.

Maxspect has been pretty tight-lipped about the finalized 'simple' and 'advanced' controllers, but hopefully since release is only a few weeks away they'll loosen them a bit

Yep, they will start shipping in 3-4 weeks according to Chris Conti and then from there will trickle down to all the retailers. I'd imagine they're flooded with orders to fill and will have trouble keeping stock just about anywhere.

Nope, I won rights to one in a local club raffle. Just waiting for the release.

There's a lot of naysayers on this thread. I'm a peninsula owner that has worked real hard to keep the open end of the tank clean of power heads. This looks really promising.

till then....

Can't wait myself. Being I am a 3 MP40 guy, I plan on only running this during peak light time say 4 hours a day in the vertical orientation to swoop around the tank picking up what ever it can in my BB tank.

That's my plan too, but with the gyre horizontal... I want to use it as a nutrient transport tool instead of using my ecotechs. I'm running BB and want to floss the rock at night.

If I see the fish still at play I may use it as my main, but from what I've seen most fish seem to point one direction while it's running. Maybe a ramp up and down may give the fish some time time to explore still. Who knows.. just excited that someone broke the powerhead mold.
