I just got my new Euro RC-500. I was a beta tester and had some problems and Jeff worked with me to get this new skimmer.
The 500 now comes with 3 Eheims instead of the 2 sp4s. The build quality is much improved. The twist flange works perfect, it has a new reinforced joint to hold the drain assembly. It is just breaking in now but it looks great. The bubbles seem smaller and it is pulling a ton of air. Time will tell how it skims and I will post some pics later, but I have to say this is a big leap forward. I can't tell you how easy Jeff was to deal with and he spent a lot of time helping me. I think any customer service problems are a ting of the past. I was leanig toward a German skimmer for my next purchase as I love the Eheim pumps. I think this puts ER on an even playing field. Time will tell.

Sweet!

I can't wait to see it in action.

The 3 eheims should be pretty sick!!!!

Yeah I was surprised as well. I think some of the other models are getting a boost, Chip said the website needed updating to show the new configuration. I'm starting to get a little foam, I didn't clean it or anything but it seems like a monster. My wife thought it looked like overkill. What's that?

Thanks Lunchbucket - I will contact ER tomorrow concerning the new impeller. I can't believe I received my RC-500 less then 30 days ago and it had 2 SP4 pumps and the new model has 3 Eheim pumps!

Mine too

Makes you wonder why they feel three Eheim pumps are need to replace two SP4 pumps. I don't get how they can do that kind of change and keep the same model number (or same price).

BTW - The Beta pictures on the EuroReef site for the RC-500 still show dual SP3 pumps. http://www.euro-reef.com/betatest.shtml

I just took a look at your tank. Great set-up! Do you use an overflow box or is your tank drilled?

Chip said the sp4s pull more air than the eheims. There is the need for the extra pump to keep up. I'm not trying to get anyone mad. Just pass some info along.

The sp3s would be the sedras, the RC 500 was 2x sp4 it shows that on the spec sheet on euros site

Hmm, how do you guys know the price won't increase for the Eheim version? Did they publish the beta version for sale, or is it still being tested?

The betas started last year, the eheims aren't going to be beta tested as was said back earlier in this thread.

It looks like the ER site was updated today The specs have been updated. The CS skimmers are gone. In sump are now just (understandably) RS series.

The Eheim models are now listed and the SPx pump specs reflect the new impeller improvements. For instance, SP4 went from 900->1080 LPH. SP5 got an improvement from 960-> 1200 LPH.

What is odd is the RC250 which had a 1200 LPH SP5 now has a 900 LPH SPE5 (Eheim).

I have an RS250 and have the new impeller to upgrade it on the way. It will be interesting to see the results.

Thanks sjm.

I wonder if you can order an RC250 with the sp5? It would make more sense.

I've actually been thinking of geting a custom RC250 done. 32" tall with 2 ehiems.....

We'll see after I check on a price....

Jim

I have to say, I dont find the SP5 all that noisy on the RS250. Granted, its in sump and in my basement. And...the Gen-X Mak4 return pump drowns out anything else....hmm. I have to go and turn off the return pump and take a fresh listen.

I have heard a local reefer's RS180. It was pretty quiet. Actually, I couldn't hear it all.

I think running them in sump makes a big difference sound wise.

I like to see ER come out with a 10"tube and 28"-30"H RC skimmer with two Eheims, that will be a very popular skimmer.

I think your right. My dual external (RC) SP4 pumps sound like they are making pop-corn with the air being chopped up in them. Very annoying. Is this typical? If not solutions I should look at?

Will these fit the Sedra pump as well that ASM uses?

Rich, you need silencers. I posted this backl on page 5. Here is the info again. This WILL solve the problem. I am very, very happy with the noise reduction of that awful slurp!

OK, here is the silencer build:

1. 4" 1/2" thin wall Sch 20 PVC pipe.

2. Two 1/2" caps

3. Two pieces of rigid air line tubing. I used the black stuff sold for lawn watering.

Drill hole in endcap to accomodate the tubing.

It is SILENT !!!!

I tested the air draw. It seems to reduce the air flow by maybe 1/2lpm. It also stabilizes the bouncing of the flowmeter ball. It actually allows for more air into the skimmer, because before I was using the air tap to restrict the airflow down to about 12lpm to quiet the sucker down.

This thing cost about $1.20 to make. I think ER should make and sell these with there skimmers. It would look cool in the grey pvc!!!

Scott - thanks for the pics. I have seen that before. I didn't think the sound was slurping but more of the air being chopped in the pump by the needle wheel.

I'll try it. Should I build two of them or do you think two pumps could share a larger unit?

Any thoughts on adding cotton to filter the air? My last skimmer with becketts had air filters to muffle the sound and the cotton really clogged up with dust over 2 weeks (its not a dusty room).

Yes.

ER sells the impellers with pinwheel for $49 for all models. I bought one for the Eheim 1260 Cerreta mod pump today.

When you order be sure to request the new pinwheel design.

Also, they no longer sell just the pinwheels. They only sell whole impeller assemblies.
