Rd3 230 pressure internal or external

Just curious if there are any pros installing externally verses internally? Is having the pump internally better for the pump because of operating temp being in cooler water or doesn’t that matter much on these pumps?

It really makes no difference with these pumps. The motors run cool internally or externally.

So do I need a conversion to standard pvc pipe for the intake side? Or does the pump come with fittings to hook both sides up to standard pvc?

All pumps sold in the US include US imperial size fittings for standard PVC pipe.

I have 2 of these pumps on Closed loop and one on my return all external running since they came out with no problems. The spare I bought as back up has never come out of the box. These are awesome pumps! I run closed loops on 150 watts and the return pump sits at 200 watts as I run everything off the return. They are so quiet you have to touch them to make sure they are running or look at RPM on controller.

So should a guy run 1 1/4” if I’m feeding other stuff from it or numb up the line to 2” and run the other reactors 3/4”?

I’d go 2” and reduce friction loss. Then use a manifold to feed the reactors via 3/4”. Personally, I try to upsize my plumbing whenever possible to increase efficiency. Doing so will allow you to reduce power consumption on these pumps by achieving the same flow at a lower power output by sheer virtue of reducing friction losses.

You don’t think going all the way up to 2” on the return will cause too much head pressure? It would be about 6’ total height of 2” and the manifold would feed 4 reactors and a refugium. It’s the 230 watt pressure pump.

2” all the way up will reduce head pressure a bit more than running 1.5” regardless of the total physical head height. Every fitting you add, increases head pressure and by using larger fittings, that would counter those increases. Thus improving the efficiency of the pump allowing you to get the same flow at a lower wattage.

Oh I see! Makes sense to me! The output is 1.5”? I was under the impression it was 1 1/4”

Pressure is 1.25” output. The flow pump has 1.5” output. It’s the plumbing that creates the friction losses on top of head pressure so reducing friction losses will reduce the total head pressure (friction loss + actual head height).
