Water Testing
Once a month I do a complete water test. So my question is, knowing the balance of Alk, Ca and Mag - is it safe to just test Alk (hanna checker so easy) and if that remains stable all 3 will be in check?

No. They may vary for a lot of reasons.. I, personally test alk every 3 days or so, calcium every two to three weeks and mag once every two months.

I tested alkalinity once a week, and magnesium and calcium once every month or two, but that was after my tanks had been stable for a couple of years. The frequency of testing will depend on how much change is going on in the system. Calcium testing might need to be done a bit more frequently than you'd expect because of issues with the consistency of salt mixes. I have zero data on how common that problem is, though.
