Canister and matrix
I m thinking of adding a little canister filter to my tank. It will have nothing but matrix in it. Your opinion?

Personally I dislike canister filters on seahorse tanks. Because they are more involved to clean, you can be more likely to skip cleaning occasionally and end up with nasty bacteria problems. Using the easiest forms of filtration mean you are less likely to avoid it when it needs to be serviced.
Do you not have a large enough biological filter now? About the ONLY time I would use a canister filter on a seahorse tank would be to add a bit more volume to a small system, and, as a water mover, but I wouldn't have anything in it but water.

I'd pick hob over cannister for seahorse tanks. I actually have a aquaclear 110 with custom media in it. Sooo easy to clean. As a matter of fact I cleaned it just now in less than 10 minutes. On top of doing a 20% water change, emptying the skimmer cup, cleaning inside of the glass, and a final outside wipe down.

Well it can't hurt as long as your willing to keep it clean. Only reason why I have no sump on my seahorse tank is because I got the ac110 and a hob octopus skimmer rated for 150g almost for free. Both on a 55 long lol. When I buy my next house in about 2 years I'll probably upgrade their system again
