Orangeshoulder tang

So I read over the recommended tang vs tank sizes and it says 6' tank for this, species.

How rigid is that for this species if I have a 5'?
I've read it's not very aggressive which is why I'm considering it.

Other fish I have are in sig. Probably looking at adding 2 tangs (different species) to round out my stock, for a total of 8 fish in a 150 dt + 35gal sump

IMO, that "group" seems an excellent choice for a 150.

I have the same "current" stock you have in a 4' tank, 65g, and I keep 2 tangs, a blue and Yellow with no problem at all.

I did QT them together and put them in at the same time. I understand adding at same time prevents 1 from instantly taking over, rather, the territory is split, maybe just not evenly.

Absolutely no agression and it's been a year now.

Maybe that helps?

Yeah, I'm thinking of just QTing for a couple of months a pair, either Yellow and squaretail or exchanging one of those for an orangeshoulder (love the orange). No TTM unless I just buy from LA where there's a guarantee for a couple of weeks.

I plan to keep my stock lower than I probably could just for ease of equipment/maintenance and overall happiness.

So I'm really only concerned that the orange can get up to 14", and that the 6' recommendation is super rigid.

Of course if he gets too big, I could just sell him to my LFS years later?

A orange shoulder will grow from 2” to 12” in a years time. Just so you have a plan to revoke if you decide it gets too large for your tank.

Could it work? I'll go with maybe, but I'm not a fan of adding a fish that you already know will outgrow your current system.

I would recommend a 6' 180 for an orange shoulder tang.

I'd say go for it. I think you must be ok with taking the fish back to the store if it ever feels cramped.

Yeah, I think the backup plan is a must if I choose to go with it.

If he stays at or under 12", I'd think he'd do fine with a lighter fish load in the DT.

What are signs he's gotten too big? Does behavior or health change?

Constant pacing of the tank is one indicator. The orange shoulder will grow to 1ft in a years time or very close to it... thats just the first 12 months. They eat and produce a lot of waste which I think you're underestimating.

Not being a jerk, but what's the difference between constant swimming and the stressed out version for tangs? More darting/frantic reactions?

Is the bioload even at max length any much different than in a 6' tank or vs another smaller tang? If I just go 1 12"+ tang, would it be equivalent to two 6-7" tangs?

Swimming and pacing are two entirely different things and you will be able to tell the difference. Bioload wise it’s not apples to apples, depends a lot on what you feed and how often. Filtration setup is also important when managing heavy eaters and waste product of the eating.

The powder blue in this video has classic pacing behavior https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgqn_doShCI

So more like they get stuck as a broken record, cutting the same path over and over.

That guy has a ton of fish in that 180g.

Anyway, tangs may be on hold for a bit. I haven't seen my mandarin since last Monday :\ Starting to worry. Had her since May w/o any issues.
