Plumbing Question
I'm taking out my old 55 gal with a canister filter and replacing it with a 75 gal with a sump. I'm planning on drilling the side for the drain. I'm doing a little overkill on the size of the pipe so I have more flexibility. You can decrease the flow with a valve but you can't increase past the size of the pipe. So I'm using 1 1/2" pipe which makes the bulkhead 3". Most internal overflow boxes are only 5" high which doesn't leave much room and I'm afraid of it being noisy.
I've only been in this for 3 years and this is my first sump and I want to do it right. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks! |

What type of drain system are you planning? Just one open channel?
I would recommend either a Herbie or Bean setup. This would virtually silent. For this, 2-3 one inch drains would be used instead of one large drain.

Yep...do 3 x 1" bulkheads in a bean animal setup...
Thats the best (right) way to do it....

Everyone has choices..
If your choice is to spend time/money drilling a tank to set it up with one of the most inferior drain setups then go for it But if you want to "do it right" as you originally stated then send that durso idea down the drain and go bean animal http://www.beananimal.com/projects/s...ow-system.aspx

Since you are drilling the tank anyway, I also would recommend a siphon drain (Herbie or Bean; one could argue that Bean is "better").
You mentioned noise in your first post. A durso will be loud, unless flow is really low.
