Maxspect Turbine Duo Pump

Ive been using the Jebao 8000LPH DC pump for my tank for around 2+ years and so far it worked out fine. I was using it in my 160gal tank so I always had the pump on 100%. After I moved and downgraded to an 80gal tank, running the same pump at 100% was a bit much. I had to throttle the pump to around 60-70% to get the right flow rate Im looking for. The pump continued to work fine for a few months, but it wasnt till I downgraded my tank and throttled the pump I noticed that the Jebao controller does not remember the pump setting when the power goes out. The new house had some electrical issues and the fuse kept tripping causing the power to go out in my tank. When the power resumes the pump was running at full speed and always drains my sump and causes a micro-bubble storm in my tank. I finally had enough and decided to get new pumps. Just so happens Maxspect came out their new Turbine Duo pump which I decided to give it a try.



Maxspect moved away from their fancy metal can packaging and used eco friendly packaging


The pump is pretty compact. The kit comes with the controller which I heard can be controlled with the app in the future.


The kit comes with various fittings and parts for different type of configurations


Heres the combine mode that I will be using for my tank


The pump is very unique and never seen done before in the aquarium world. Basically there is a motor in the center with output shaft on either end of the motor which drives 2 impellers, giving it 2 inlets and 2 outlets which maximizes the possibility for plumbing. Its mostly designed for close loop systems or split usage where one side is for the return pump and the other drives all the reactor and/or chiller in your system. You can combine the dual outlets into a single to increase the flow, or remove one of the impellers and use it like a standard pump. You can check out the flow rates for different flows, but I must say their flow data is a bit optimistic.



Installation was pretty straight forward. I had to shorten the pipe from my old pump since that collector adds a lot of height to the pump. Turning the pump on the first time, it was much quieter than the Jebao. It has less vibration and humming and my tank runs much quieter.

I was waiting for the pump to ramp up and was prepared to be amazed with the flow....but was a bit disappointed. At 100%, the flow rate is slower than when my Jebao pump was running at 70%. According to the chart above the combined pump can flow 8500L and 5800L at 1.5m, but the flow is much less than that. Its not that much of a big deal for me as I think it still have enough of flow for my tank, but if you are thinking of using this on a larger tank, I would look into something else. Just looking at the pump itself you can see why it suffers a bit in the flow department as the motor housing itself, when compared to other pumps on the market, is much smaller. The motor housing on the jebao alone is bigger than the complete package for the Maxspect Turbine Duo. The small motor wouldnt have enough power to provide the flow rate at high pump head.

Where this pump shines, or what its mainly designed for is probably closed loop system. The controller have several modes which controls flow pattern. The Dual outlet allows multiple inlets and outlet locations in the tank and still use only 1 pump. Also for applications where there isnt much room to put another pump, you need 1 pump for the return and another to feed the chiller and reactors. This pump would definitely save a lot of space in your system and provide flexibility in your design.

All in all Im happy with the pump, Its a quality product if it suits your application.

Hello, are you still using the turbine duo pump? And If not, why you decided to change it?
