They will help with mechanical filtration. However, if not cleaned or switched out regularly, they can become nitrate factories.

Can you just change these out and wash them in the washer?

Yes, you can wash them, but I'll let someone else tell you about that as I don't use them.

I soak mine in 1-part bleach to about 6-parts water for a few days, rinse them out at the sink, hang to dry and reuse over and over and over and over..............
Pros for me- cleaps my sump clean, detritus and sand free Cons for me- extra work |

I keep one in my sump 24/7 and change it out every day. Throw them in the wash with a little bleach on the weekend. I believe they remove more organics than my monster skimmer does.

I'm with elegance. They look funky after a few days- and that's good! I own 4, and change them out every few days. I wash them in the washing machine by themselves with a little bleach and then rinse with RO water and let air dry.

The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. “It’s overfull! No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.” Current Tank Info: 56g, 20g. |
