Anyone know how to upgrade Lifereef Skimmer?

I have a lifereef venturi skimmer and am less then thrileld with its performance. The bubbles it is creating are larger then I would like. Is is possible to modify it to be more efficient?

I was thinking of moving the venturi from the output of the pump to the input and then switching out the little giant pump with a needlewheel pump. Hopefully this will create smaller bubbles.

Anybody try this or some other method? Any advice would be most appreciated. Its an expensive skimmer for what it is, but at least the quality of workmanship is good so I don't feel completly jipped.
