I figured I would take full advantage of my membership and start a blog. If you are viewing this, please feel free to make tasteful comments and advice.

This deployment has given me COPIOUS amounts of time to research and plan improvements and upgrades to my 125gal tank.

I have all of these on a living word document, but why not share (and open myself to comments and suggestions)?

Round one....Chapter Two (Lighting)

Posted 09/27/2013 at 10:47 AM by RandoReefer

The age old problem with buying new technologies... PROS/CONS.

After researching TONS of light fixtures and reviewing hundreds of customer reviews I narrowed my options to two fixtures. (Factors to a decision... Control-ability, Upgrade-ability, Color spectrum.)

LED LIGHT FIXTURES W/EQUIPMENT

Ecotech Radion XR30w (Gen2):

-Needs/Costs for setup and GO!

-Ecotech Radion XR30w: (4)@$549.99 ($2199.96)
-Long Rail Kit XR618: (2)@$151.98
-Premium Hanging Kit XR655: (2)@$89.98
TOTAL: $2441.92

PROS:
-Works wirelessly with MP40wES.
-Great spread across tank. (Only need 3)
-Whites, Blues, Purples, Reds, and Greens, color variation options.

CONS:
-Only ceiling or wall hang, with brackets and cables. (Rails are black)
-Requires computer to be plugged in to change light settings. (Reeflink coming soon..)
-Controller-less. (Without direct USB connection to computer.)

Aquatic Illumination Vega Color:

-Needs/Costs for setup and GO!

-AI Vega Color LED: (4)@$499.99 ea $1999.96
-AI Controller (If needed): (1)@$79.99
-AI Director: (1)@ $99.99 (approx..)
-*AI EXT Tank Mount: (2-3)@ $64.99 $129.98 or ($194.97)
TOTAL: $2229.93

PROS:
-Built-in wireless to talk to each light.
-At $50 cheaper than Radions (maybe back to $100) can afford (4) for coverage.
-Whites, Blues, Purples, Reds, and Greens, color variation options.
-Unique rail mounting options that “hide cords”. (Also can hung)

CONS:
-Wireless “light controller” gets A LOT of bad reviews.
-AI Director still coming…(Like WiFi hotspot for lights) (Also expecting Neptune module)
- “Disco-ball” effect on water.
