LED Heat

How much heat does a 3W CREE produce at full bore? I'm dry-testing the layout of LEDs for my fixture, and I was concerned about putting an LED over the wires (even though they're recessed, LED would fit flush to heatsink). Is there any risk of an LED's heat compromising the insulation on the fan wires?

The heatsink has a recessed channel for fan wires, so I was thinking about encasing the wires in thermal paste in that channel, and attaching the LED over it.
