Neon green finger leather burned???

I have a green neon finger leather coral. It is doing real well now but last week it wasn't. Last week the leather looked like somebody took a match and burnt it because some parts of the leather started to turn black all of a sudden. I can't figure out why because the water quality was all within range and the leather is situated where the corals surrounding it are peaceful corals. The black on it was so bad that it disinitegrated parts of the leather. Up to now I can't figure out why but the leather is doing well now and the black parts are starting to go away. I did not do anything different which includes the maintenance of the tank and feeding the corals.

Leather corals are damn tough! Sorry to hear about the problem. How long have you had in the tank? What type of lighting do you have? How big is it?

Just be careful if it does dye and has any size it could pollute your tank with toxins so keep a very close eye on it.

Did you dose anything that might have hit it directly? Or, did any salt creep fall on it?

The corals around it are just zoos and mushrooms. The next set of corals that may come close is another finger leather, toadstool and star polyps. I did dose the tank with calcium, strotium and iodine but that's it. And no salt creep fell on it.

I have a 90 gallon reef tank that has been set up for 2 to 3 months now from which 90% of the setup came from an established 46 gallon reef tank. My lighting is over 500 metal halides and pc combined. The leather grew even faster with this type of lighting.

I had a similar thing happen to me recently. I have a number of other leather corals that are doing great, but got a neon green finger leather and it started turning black and dissolving after 3 days. I didn't want to risk any spread of the problem so I took the whole thing out and trashed it then did a water change. Never had that happen to me before so I suspect they are just exceptionally sensitive to being moved.

ah... you got other leathers. Toadstools, finger leathers, and cabbage leathers do not generally get along well together.

Toadstools and finger leathers compete in invisible chemical warfare regularly.

Try to seperate them and not let the flow hitting from 1 leather to another leather. hth

Do you run carbon? I have a few leathers and run carbon 24/7.

my point was I've never had any problems with my various leathers touching or being near each other. I have multiple sarcos, lobos, sinularia and capnella all growing in the same area and they frequently make physical contact. Never seen any probs, but for one reason or another the green finger did not like it. I even moved it to a different part of the tank. Don't know if it was chemical warfare or something else.
