Questions about Sea Hares

Hey folks-

Just wondering if any of you have had a sea hare before? If so,what kind was it? What kinds of algae did it eat?

And...are they nocturnal?

Thanks

Had one until he got chopped up in a powerhead. Bought him for hair algae but I suggest fighting the problem with a phosphate reactor and less feedings. He slept at night. Pretty neat but I no longer have algae and don't need one again. What kind of algae do you have?

They are pretty good at eating HA, I had one that cleared a 55 in about 4 weeks and then got stuck in a PW and died. I got one for my 125 a few months ago, ate HA not all of it but I have not seen it for a long time, I guess it's gone. Cover you PHs if you get one and after finsh your HA pass it to some one else

I had one. It worked great! Hair algae, red slime (cyno). It did it all in my 75g. Cleared it out and then starved to death. Had i known i would have feed it nori more. I also put it in my refuge and it goes to town. It's an ugly little thing that only a mother could love, but i did like mine alot.

Thanks guys-

I have never been able to ID this algae I have. Strangely I've never had a problem with hair algae or cyano. But a friend at the LFS suggested I try a sea hare. The one she gave me is known to eat all sorts of algae. I guess time will tell.

They do wonders on hair algae! I found mine to bury itself during the day under the sand. And in the morning find patches of hair algae mowed down scattered around the tank!

Mine didn't do much. Spent all of it's time on the sand and created a lot of poop. Most of my HA was on my rocks (this was toward the end of my cycle). It ended up in the powerhead.

However, there are many species so I imagine just as many feeding behaviours.

The one I had was all black with a few green spots.

Mexican turbo snails made a much much bigger difference in my hair algae, if that is what you're interested in removing.
