If you have easy access to the tunze magnets to replace the hardware included you might consider picking up a set. The hardware included will work, but it is kind of a pain to deal with and I think most (I did) just buy the magnet to hold it to the tank soon after setting it up. Not necessary, but it may save you some headaches down the road. Awesome skimmer by the way.

I just got mine setup last week, running in-tank on my 65g. I was lucky and found a nice used one. It pulled out about 200 ml of skimmate in the first 3 days, although a lot of air bubbles are escaping.
I would read through all the threads on problems with the 9010 in the Tunze forum. That will give you a great idea on what things to look for before setting it up (i.e. checking all the air tube intake connections). trigger111 is correct about the included mounts (not the most user friendly for hanging on rimmed tanks), but it works okay. At some point, I will probably order a magnet. Mine had longer screws - not sure if they came std or not, but I went out and bought some more at Lowe's for my Osmolator setup. It runs a bit louder than I was expected, but it works great! |

Where do you find the magnets? If they are truly worth it, i will wait to install it until i can get one. How about supergluing one magnet on the actual skimmer and putting another one on the outside of the tank, would this accomplish the same thing? Bunker

The magnets can be bought at marine depot or most likely wherever you go the skimmer from. Since your getting the skimmer tomorrow I would set it up with the brackets included and let it run for a week and see if it is something that you can deal with because the magnets are kind of pricey. My problem was (besides being a pain to install) that over time the skimmer would start to tilt and lean to one side which affected performance. I am sure that could have been fixed without the use of the magnets but they did the trick. So if you have a spare 50 bucks or so the magnets are worth it, otherwise it might be best to wait and see how the brackets work for you.

I did order the skimmer from Marine Depot... free shipping, and they actually had it in stock... i will go with your advice and try it stock for now... how much will it pull out when i am cycling the tank???... i have 50lbs of base dry rock, and have ordered 50 lbs of uncured Fiji rock from Premium aquatics that will arrive Friday(why pay for cured rock when you are not sure it is cured or not, and two day shipping, even cured rock will go bad). I have never used a skimmer, and am worried that i wont even know if it is not running correctly. Bunker

Magnets not needed in sump
Are you planning to use the 9010 in your sump or in your aquarium?
When configured for sump use, the magnets are not needed. In the sump, the skimmer must sit on a firm surface to seal the solid bottom plate and to keep the water level high inside the skimmer. The sump water level may be as low as 4-inches but the internal water level must reach the "blue line" near the top of the skimmer body. When configured for aquarium use, the bottom plate used has an open grate. The water levels inside and outside the skimmer are the same. The magnets are used to hold the skimmer so that the water level is at the "blue line." The Tunze Magnet Holder 6080.50 is $36. It can mount on either the upper portion or the bottom portion of the skimmer. It would be hard to match the quality of this magnet with a DIY magnet. |
