I had the same thing too..I always thought it was the male.
----------------- Male angler The male angler for a while was thought to be a separate fish altogether due to its vast physical difference from its female counterpart. The male is much smaller than the female, about 20-30% of the female's size. It has no lure. In order to survive with these handicaps, the male must find a female, and attach himself to the female by biting into her skin. When he bites he releases an enzyme that digests the female's skin, as well as that of his mouth. The male now lives forever as a parasite and degenerates, fusing himself with the female's body. He gains nourishment from her bloodstream, and eventually the male becomes just a pair of gonads, releasing sperm as required.

This is for deep sea anglers not the "frog fish" we commonly find in the hobby. If you look up mated pairs of "frog fish" or even anglers in a search on RC you will see they are close to each other in size.
You say you "had" the same thing. Is the fish still alive? |

Glad you got him out of the fish. Gave me the shivers when I first saw it.

if anybody ever finds more of these and are wondering what to do with them... dead or alive... send them to ME! I would so totally pay for shipping.
I would even send some friendly tank critters as a thanks!

You may have posted just in time. Mine has been sitting in a tiny container of water on my desk for a long time now. It was moving last night and I think again this morning. I was going to change the water in its container last night, but I didn't worry figuring most people were telling me to put it in alcohol anyways. I will change the water as soon as I get home from work and turn on a light above it to keep it warm. I might even be nice and throw in a little piece of PVC for it to curl into.
I am really glad you messaged me and really hope it is still alive. PM me with contact info. |

The little blood sucker is still alive. I did a water change on the little 1quart container I am keeping it in. I can see why you would be interested in them a bit because they swim similar to the mantis shrimp. The color isn't so great though and it doesn't have the cool eye balls or raptor/spear like appendages.
I'm glad I don't have to kill it and someone can put it to use. Are you studying this little buggers? |

Just thought everyone would like to know that this fish is alive and well and now living in a tank that is connected to my larger reef system. He is eating well and seems to be very healthy.
I am still not sure how long long I should qt the hermits and rock that was in with the isopod. Does anyone know how long this critters take to mature? If there life span is only a couple months then I will no by now that I have no more ispods because they would be visible. |
