Pyramid Snails on Astrea
Are there any other ways to get rid of these guys besides wrasses and manual extraction?
Thanks |

Copper..... Of course, that won't necessarily help you with anything else in your tank

i got through a plague by manual extraction. scoped every snail on the glass for a while. haven't seen any in a really long time, so I think I won [for now]
argggh! I hate those little bleeps next time i get clams, they are going to go in a little hammock suspended from above too. and that is primarily why I have stayed away from clams ever since they killed my two once upon a time.

Hopefully you read the instructions and it told you what to do. I personally just manually remove them.

dc, I was totally kidding (as was Travis). Copper would kill everything in the tank.
It must have taken forever for these guys to reach plague proportions. I remember seeing a couple in the sand back in December (not knowing what it was) and they are just now in numbers that I am noticing them on the astreas. |

Are you 100% sure they are Pyramidella? First read through this: http://www.reefland.com/rho/2006/05/...lid_snails.php Then, go to Radio Shack and ask them where their "Pocket Microscope" is. For $9.99, you can get an awesome little microscope with 60-100x zoom. Works great at looking at little pods and snails. Just take a suspected snail out, put it on a white piece of paper, and view it under the microscope. You should be able to ID it from there. You might be lucky and only have Rissoids. That's what I have.

When I first looked into these snails I thought Rissoids so didn't worry about them... now they are covering the bottom of the asteras. If I clean them off in a day or so new/different ones will take their place.
If they were rissoids and were looking to eat the algae off the snails they would cover the snail not just stay at the bottom (I would assume). Also they wouldn't line up around the soft edge (again, an assumption). I tried to use a magnifying class to make an ID but it wasn't strong enough. I will see if my kids have a scope or I will just buy one. Thanks |
