QT tank

Hello,

I am thinking of starting a Quarantine tank. What is the minimum size and equipment that I need to add? It will support a 55g tank.

It were me I would use a bare bottom 55. A decent hang on skimmer. And florescent lights. Also I would tap a valve on the side near the bottom to make water changes easier. You will do allot of that. Is there anything i am missing guys?

Would you run a refug for your QT tank, wet/dry, or hang on filter? A QT tank sounds like a lot of work for just a QT tank as well as quite an investment. Just the hang on skimmer is gonna cost you $75-$100.

For a 55 a 10-20G would be ok, bigger is obviously better but it needs to be easy to store too. I just broke my old 10 I was using and am thinking of getting a 12G Eclipe to make life a little easier. Heater, sponge or cheap power filter, small powerhead, and PVC fittings is about all you need.

If your stocking a 55 gallon tank a $10 ten gallon Petco/Petsmart tank will work fine. It will hold one or two small fish with no problem and thats all you should be putting into a show tank at one time anyway.

While your at Petco/Petsmart purchase a small $10 power filter and an inexpensive heater. Also pick up an inexpensive Seachem Ammonia Alert Badge (will save you from having to do a zillion ammonia tests during QT). You can use a nearby desk lamp for lighting.

On the way home stop by Home Depot and pick up some PVC pipes (for fish to hide in) and a can of white spray paint.

Use a bare bottom QT and paint the outside bottom white .. this will allow you to readily spot any uneaten food/fish debris which you can siphon out with a turkey baster. Keeping the QT clean will go along way in maintaining water quality.
