Question about picking up live stock

I am going to pick up 100lbs of live rock 100lbs of live sand fox face, royal gramma, 2 cleaner shrimp.

1. What did I need to bring to pick them up in? I have 5 5 gallon buckets and a couple of bags. Is that going to be enough?

2. I have a tank that is already cycled. I would like to add the rock with the fish and shrimp. Is that going to work? Will there be another cycle when I add the rock? Should I take some water to avoid that?

Thanks for your help. I am sure I will think of other questions as well.

3. should I add water to the rock? or should I just place it in the buckets? It is about a 10 to 20 minute drive to my house

Current tank has about 50 lbs of live rock and about 75 lbs of live sand. (should I even add the sand to the tank? Right now it is about 3 inches deep)

1. I think that should be enough hardware to bring along for the transfer.

2. That all depends Im sure there will be some die-off in the sand and maybe some in the rock. I will let it sit for a couple of days either way. If its only 10-20 minutes away why not keep the fish and shrimp there incase the tank does have a mini cycle?

3. Keep the rock under water. The more its out of water the more die-off will occur. Thus giving a longer cycle in the new 75g.

I believe 100# of sand is plenty for a 75g.

Well the guy is breaking down his tank so he won't be able to keep the fish at all. I guess I could add them to the 40 gallon I have set up for a few days? I hate to do that because the Royal Gramma will be really hard to catch again. Anything else I could do to help with the cycle?

I would still cycle the rock atleast. Add the fish and shrimps(oooohhh sounds like a BBQ) to the tank you have cycled. Put the rock in a seperate container just too make sure there is no cycle. The fish will get stressed if you do get a cycle and could die. JMO of course.

Adding th enew rock will cause a cycle which will not be a good environment for your new stock, or any other stock that is currently in the tank.

YOur best bet is to either leave the new fish and shrimp you are buying in a seperate container until the cycle is over, or leave the rock in a different container for a few days.

I would go with option A since even moving the rock from a container in your home to your tank can cause a cycle, especially since most of us have to make the aquascaping look all pretty.

IMO if you are unable to keep the new rock and new fish in seperate containers until after the cycle, then it would be best to leave one of them behind for someone else to get.

JMO.

I have moved live rock a few times now from an established tank, to a new tank without having any noticeable cycle. Just keep it submerged. What I do is just bring a syphon hose and a few cheap rubbermaid totes. Fill up a few 5g jugs with the other persons tank water. Pull the rock out of the tank, into the totes filling about halfway up. Move them to your truck (or car). After they are already loaded up, fill them up about 2/3 with the water. For the fish, wait till the tank is empty of rock, and only has about 3" of water left. The fish at that point will be caught effortlessly.

IMO I would not take the sand it would most likely be trouble. And I use the same method as scubasteve.

Yeah I work for a LFS and we move tanks and rock all the time. As long as the rock isn't out of water long, it'll be ok. There is not a guaranteed cycle associated with taking rock out of a tank. Go with Scuba_steve's method.

Thanks a lot guys. Yesterday I started to notice some ich on my tang I have in the 40 gallon reef tank (stressed from a little tank.) (It is going into the bigger tank plus it is 2 1/2 inches long) I really don't want to put any other fish in with it. I think I will be very careful and try scuba_steves's method. Can inverts get ich? Could I put the cleaner shrimp with the tang? (stupid question I am sure)
