Try AquaIllumniation for Solaris' competition.

Competition, perhaps, but a 48 inch fixture is still over $2000. When the price is half that, I'll consider one....

right. we are in the primitive phase of the LED era. that's why I'm thinking already made dedicated LED lamps for other purposes may be the best PAR/$ options there are right now.

and why not have like t-5/VHO actinic with white LED arrays as a first step. it would still be pretty cool running vs MH. and definitely more affordable using a couple of $50 white arrays.

Add a few more competitors and the price will start coming down especially when the incadescent bulb people start looking for other options.

Yeah, but you have to consider the things you don't have to pay for anymore in the long run. You won't need replacement bulbs every 6 months to a year. You wont need to run your chiller ( at least the LFS who has one doesn't have to anymore ). Smaller electrical bills.

Sure the up front cost is hard to stomach, I can't argue with you there. But you have to look at the long term costs too.

And buffulo123 stated, this is just the beginning of the LED era, I'm sure with a few more competitors and some more innovation, prices will come down. Just look at plasma tvs, even the small ones were over 10K not too long ago, now you can get a 50" for $1700 online.

Luxeon L3s.

THeyre about 20 lumens per watt, or about 1/3 the efficiency of PC bulbs.

If you're going to do it, use the Seoul Semiconductor P4s. They atleast have reasonable efficiency.

The long term costs are higher, considering the very low efficiency of the solaris. If you want to compare costs, compare it to a 70wmH setup, because thats the sort of light you're looking at.
