traveling on an airplane with fish?

I'm going on vacation soon (florida) and was wondering if I were to see something down there in a lfs that I liked, would it be possible to bring it back with me? Don't know what the flight rules are....

no liquid purchased outside the secured part of the airport is aloud..
I would call your airline before you leave and just ask them what their rules are... that way if you see some you like and buy it you don't get the airport and they refuse it...

The NO liquid ban has been relaxed.

Now its all liquids must be in containers of 3oz or less. And all of those containers must fit inside a 1qt zip lock.

So, if you get a fish that can fit in a 3oz bottle, go for it.

Otherwise, pack it good and check it. Remember, its VERY VERY cold at 30,000+ feet. (Like -30 degrees F Cold)

i'm pretty sure cold wont be an issue, they have to pressurize the cargo areas also. so it will stay the same temp as the cabin.

I flew with two frags from Orange County CA to Portland OR earlier this month. i had to check them and the total water hd to be less then 3.5oz. Although they didn't check cuz I was closer to 9oz.

You can not bring any frags on the plane. It is possible to look into having the fish or corals shipped to your home so you could get more, but cost is an issue.

Good Luck

Why not ship it back overnight???? Then you wouldn't have to worry at all.

agreed just bring a styrofome cooler box or call the lfs and ask if they have one. Pack all the stuff you find up add a heat/cool pack and ship it before 4:30. It will then go on the same kind of plane and handled by the same people as your flight. Really it comes down to peace of mind and 30-40 dollars. I would bet if you shipped using in-flight cargo it would be probably handled the same as if you shipped nextday air. The only diffrence is it would be delivered as soon as you land as opposed to the next morning. But if fedex's marketing makes you feel better then ship it for 30-40 dollars in this hobby thats not much.

Put your frags in a small ziploc and swallow them. When you get home just poop in the tank. The protien skimmer should clean up the mess.

.... but what about arcopora and montipora fanatics?

Yeah, I've been kind of curious as per how to fly with frags since I'll be able to visit Cap. Bay and my favorite LFS next month (soooOOOOoooo tempting!) Anyone else had any good/bad experience to share (particularly domestic flights and especially any Delta flights?)?

You could just drive home. Then you'd only have to rent a car, pay for fuel, and miss a few days of work. Fed Ex might be the way to go.

Remember though, With FedEx you can unsure then. If they die on the plane ride home then you can't say anything. Also if the package gets damaged by FedEx, they pay for everything. if they damage it on the plane comeing home, they will tell you to pack better next time.

With most corals it's better to ship them damp rather than in a little bit of water. Acros, montis are particularly suited to this.

Fish - did it a week ago. Don't take on as hand luggage, pack into checked luggage, double bagged and in a styrofoam as per IATA rules. I would check with your airline first tho'.

I am currently out of town and just picked up a nice rock of zoos about 4"x4". Would it be ok to pack them with a couple tablespoons of water in a fish bag in my checked baggage, or should i have them in enough water to be submerged. It's only an hour flight.

ha, If it was legal I would.... I never really see anything that good looking anyway when I scuba/snorkel. The most interesting thing I've seen is a unicorn tang. I'm not into sps, and that mostly what I've seen. Now if I were in an area that had gem tangs schooling

air travel

Ok heres the deal. Right since 9/11 there is no liquid allowed on the plane. So go to walmart and purchace yourself a couple of beer o kegs, they are a lime green insulated type 32oz mug with a handle and a screw on top that seals. Will hold fish or coral anything on the small side in a plastic bag tied and inverted so the ogygen wont escape. them wrap in a towel and pack in your checked lugage. 100% success rate for me so far.

I talked with the local TSA about this.
You can check it as baggage, & mark it as live animals/fish. That way it would not go thru the x-ray machine. But it may have to be opened & inspected, to insure it is live animals/fish.
