yes you can run a chiller without a sump, have you tried using a fan and blowing it across the surface of the water? This makes a nice dent in high temperature. Would probably be more than enough to drop that temp down to at least 78-80.
what's the ambient room temperature where the tank is located? 82-84 is kinda high without lights running. May wanna check to make sure the heater is not sticking in the on position as they are almost all prone to do. I found a stuck heater on a tank that I had fought with temp for over a year, once removed i watched my temp drop from 81 down to 74 (window a/c moutned close to tank to battle the high temps....turns out the problem was a heater, go figure)

Is it an open back canopy? if so, use a clip on fan from walmart, like $10 which it doesn't take a math wizz to figure out that's alot cheaper than a chiller.

I am a firm believer in using a fan on a large tank with an open canopy. I was at around 84-86 degrees last summer and I just put a regular desk fan on a table next to my tank and it dropped my temp to 78-80. It was great but evaporation was a killer and you will need to top off a bunch more.

evaporation will increase dramatically, but this is a good thing, just a pain in the butt to topp off more often.

Hello,
My little clip-on fan drops my 50G tank from 84 to about 80 in 2 hours. Pretty quick temperature drop. It does evaporate close to one gallon of water during this 2 hours period. Pretty impressive for a 10$ investment. Cheers, Marc. |
