Question All-glass mission stands, feedback?

Looking for some feedback on the mission series stands all-glass sells.
Seems somewhat expensive. Like the durable finish of it, even though its probably particle board underneath Good height. Easy to get. Thinking of picking one up in cherry for a 90 gallon tank.

Any owners want to comment on how theirs has held up? Is the center door brace removable for sump installation with a tank on top? Other comments? What sump size/design are you using under yours?

I have one under my 90. I'm running a 20g long sump with a seperate 5g fuge. You could fit a larger tank underneath for a sump, I just had the 20 lying around to use. The most frustrating thing about the mission was the canopy. I had to modify mine for my T5 lights (took off the door on top and cut the center brace and used some drawer tracks to slide the lights back and forth). I used the door to make a cabinet to the left of the tank to hide the electrical stuff (see below). The finish is nice and durable, though I have used a cover-up pencil you can find at home depot to cover any blemishes that occured during installation and mods. Here are some pics:

The cherry is a really nice color and matches our other furniture. The stand and canopy are nice looking giving it a look of furniture.

There's no center brace under the 90 to worry about. Above is my sump/fuge.

And here's the lighting

Looks good! I also like the very simplified refuge and sump design. Is that a 10g fuge? Perhaps I was remembering the 72" cabinet which has an off center brace for the third door...

Any other [dis]satisfied owners?

Yes, the 72" does have an offcenter brace. It is a 5g fuge, but could fit a 10g if I wanted to, it would just hang over the return a little. Like the 20g used for the sump, I had the 5g in the garage. I'm from the KISS (keep it simple stupid) camp with my tank. I try to go slowly and keep things as simplified as possible!!

I am considering this stand myself for a 120, so I will be following this thread with interest.

Trigeek - Do you know the inside dimensions of the canopy (obviously not quite big enough for your lighting )?

Thanks.

Another quicky for current owners: Is it a hopeless to try packing in a 18" wide sump underneath (thinking 40breeder sized)? The back is open but I'm not sure its possible to cram that in.

Theatrus,

You could get a 40g breeder in there if the tank is less than 40 inches long (I believe 40g breeders are like 36 inches long). The cabinet measures 16 5/8 inches front to back on the sides between the lateral supports. However, it is open in the back for a length of 40 inches. The floor of the stand measured from back to front is 17 1/8 inches along the opening. The breeder would hang about 1 inch over the back, which could easily be supported by rigging up something to have that 1 inch of the sump to rest on (the floor of the stand sits 4 inches off of the floor, so a 2x4 would be more than adequate to provide the support of the inch of overhanging tank). The entire length of the cabinet underneath is 48 inches, so a 36 inch long tank will leave you with 6 inches on either side to play with for storage etc. Hope this helps.

The inside of the 90g canopy measures 48 inch across and 8 inches high, however the canopy rests 2 inches below the top of the glass, placing the top of the canopy 6 inches from the water. There is a pesky center brace along the top of the canopy that presents some difficulties with mounting lighting kits like mine. The lack of height in the canopy poses problems with MH. My kit will fit inside the canopy, but the supports of the kit would not allow the canopy to rest onto the tank well and, in order to get into the tank from above, I would have to remove the canopy and lights which is really a two person job. So I went with the Trigeek sliding track rig which works great. I slide my lights back to get into the tank and it also allows for a better cooling flow through the canopy (heat had been an issue for me). The 120g dimensions are probably different but I would think the canopy may pose similar challenges. They look great but aren't really reef friendly, unless modified somehow.

Helps a ton!! Unfortunately, the only LFS with Mission stands on display is a good 45 minute drive Now just to debate if my construction skills are up to snuff for custom acrylic or if I should just do my glass sump idea.

Thanks Trigeek!

I think if I go with the Mission series stand, I'll skip the canopy. I'm thinking about an all-in-one fixture anyway and if I go with MH, heat would certainly be a big issue, assuming I could even fit the fixture in the canopy. Thanks again.

Oh - and thanks to Theatrus for starting this thread.

One last minor question for owners: do the door hinges protrude into the inside stand area when the doors are closed?

Yes, they protrude about 1/4 inch. They are seated at the middle end of the front lateral support, so they are about 4 inches from the sidewall. The top hinge is pretty high.
