Yes, but how long it will take will vary. Use a higer ratio of live to base.

Well I am sure if there are enoug pores and crevices, bacteria and other micron sized creatures will multiply and seek refuge in there. eventually I am sure algae will also take root in the surface area, as it tends to go where it pleases.
I suppose that makes it live no? It is hosting living organisms after all.... Maybe it needs that coralline algae though? Dont know enough about that part. I would also not mind some elaboration on this from the more experienced aquarists here though, as I am curious myself. |

Yes. I have seen people put cinder blocks in a tank with live rock and the block became live.

Put some of the base rock on the bottom and be sure to put your sand in after so the rock won't tumble as easily. Then mix the live and base together to help promote the seeing. I think you're a little high on your ratio of base to live but if you're willing to wait for it to seed it will still work I think.

I never put more than 20 percent of my rock as live rock , the rest is base rock. TO DO 100 percent live rock is really a waste of money and unnecessary. My tank is 9 months old now(My 3rd tank) and its very difficult to tell which is which. Corraline and copapods grow like wildfire so your tank will be live in no time.
