filter

I like canister filters, they are good for removing stuff from the water and a great place to run carbon. Most "reefers" call them "nitrate factories" and they may be if you don't clean them every couple of weeks. There is no one answer and there are lots of ways to do things. I don't think i would use a spray bar.

I've used both on my Filstar XP2, currently not using it. If you need more surface agitation, it can help some.

I had an XP2 on my 56gal tank. Always had issues with the nitrate rising and I cleaned the thing at least once a week. On my 90gal with sump the nitrate are 0.

I used the spray bar as it agitated the surface. I had two power heads in the tank as well to create current.

I briefly had some small nitrate spikes, only to about 20 ppm. I'm now using Seachem's Matrix (small man-made rock rubble) in the cannister, along with carbon & Purigen - nitrates reduced to 0 after about a month and have never been seen since.

I put a couple coarse pads in there along with some phoszorb and carbon and a micro filter. I think I will just use some filter floss (cheaper) and phoszorb and carbon after I discard the pads. I may try some LR rubble or Seachem Matrix as well......thanks
