Skimming from surface

I was just thinking that most of the proteins and slim that our skimmers pull out of the water resides near the surface of the tank. Wouldn't it be smart to have the intake pull water from the top? I have a HOB skimmer and was thinking of using latex tubing (which is very flexible) to connect to the pump and connecting the intake side to a float so that no matter what the water level is it will always skim off the top.

That is a great idea. A lot of ppl feed their skimmer with the water from the overflow return. This is done because that water is the dirtiest.
