What is this for on top of my Berlin skimmer?

Hey guys...
I just picked up this Berlin skimmer used and was wondering what this is on top of the collection cup. I saw in a E-Bay post that had a new Berlin skimmer for sale that it was some sort of carbon air filter. Does anyone know if this is true and what exactly does it do/is used for? It is a clear acrylic cup with a wire mesh that sits on top of the collection cup lid (which also has holes in the top venting into this thing. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Jim

Thats looks like that is exactly what it is. I would imagine the extra part is for carbon to keep the smell of the skimmate to a minimum.

So....would I just layer the mesh with active carbon to absorb the smell and replace every so often?

Jim

I would put a piece of filter pad over it to keep the dust out of the skimmer and then activated carbon. Probably change it every 6 months or more depending on your skimmate production

I'm pretty sure that cup is used when using ozone.

definitely for carbon, and it would be a bonus with ozone!

chuck p is absolutely right, it is for OZONE, and it must be used with a carbon pad to prevent Ozone Gas from exiting to the air... it is not good to have free ozone around items that are not ozone resistant. even as ozone dissipates extremely fast, low oxygen exchange areas like, cabinets under tanks, can build up a heavy concentration, and deterioration of pumps, plastics, metal, etc. will occur... remember OZONE is an OXIDIZER, and things become either RUSTED or BRITTLE really fast
