External skimmer question

It's time for a new skimmer. I've always had in-sump skimmers, but now I'm looking at an MRC external. Since it won't fit under my stand, I'll need to put it next to the tank. My question is in regards to plumbing. Do I have to drill the side of my sump for the feed, or can I put the pump in the sump and run the plumbing up over the sump lip, then back down into the skimmer? Will water level changes (feed cycle) affect skimmer output in this configuration like it does on an in-sump skimmer?

Thanks!

Why don't you just feed it from your overflow with no pumps?

I don't think it would work in my current setup. I would have to put a 90 elbow out of the bottom of the tank and run it horizontally about 6 feet before putting it into the skimmer. It seems to me that wouldn't be smooth flow.

I can probably change the whole configuration so that it would work when we move to another house later this year.
