I have used Rustoleum's High Performance gloss black on two of my tanks. It looks amazing and sticks wel to the tank. It looks exactly like my black acrylic overflow. I had the black fish tank backgrounds that you get from the pet store and it looks terrible compared to the paint.

For what it's worth, I opted to use black plexi-glass and two faced tape. This lets me change colors later if I wanted to.

I used spray paint, it was a big can from home depot that I think had "industrial" in the name somewhere. basicly it was the cheapest. its worked perfectly. since your painting the outside, its actual finish/quality doesnt even matter.

I dont really like films or backings because salt can end up between them, which can be cleaned, but whats the point. what other color would you ever want? blue? I like black because it makes power heads blend.

I used black acrylic but I cut it to size and siliconed it on the inside to avoid creep... It looks pretty good... In hindsite I'd probably use black ABS next time since coraline grows better on ABS In my experience...

whats the benefit? Im thinking I could scrape the paint off my tank easier than you could scrape that panel out of the inside of yours... nothing against it, just saying. not like paint is final, its gone in about 10min with a razor blade.

Krylon Fusion for Plastics spray paint works great on tanks. It dries to a plastic like finish.
