What is considered an average load for a 120 reef tank?

Depends on total bio load, Fish compatibility, ultimate size, amount/age of LR and sand and most importantly your commitment to keeping a pristine environment for all you get.
Even if it means doing a water change every couple of days. I think on last count I have 14 fish in my 125 gal. most have been in tank for over 4 years. I do a 25% water change weekly and have about 100+ lbs of very mature live rock and sand. I also have a very good protein skimmer. Ultimatly up to you. Just go slow and be responsible.

Exactly what OmarD said. Depends on you and your set up. For example, I have a 180G FOWLR tank that is very high Bio Load but I do weekly water changes. I also have a 65G Reef with only 3 small fish and only do monthly water changes. Both have great water quality (even though the stocking couldnt be more different) because I make sure to care for them. So it really depends on you.
