chiller on 40 display/20 frag/30 sump?

is a chiller necessary to maintain a stable temp?

i've had many sizes of tanks over the past few years 10, 58, 20, 90, and i can't seem to maintain a rock solid temperature, even with fans and a controller.

is a chiller a good solution? i'm planning setting up a 40 breeder right now (after i move) with a 20g frag system, and a shared 30 sump.

i would love to keep a really solid temp with this iteration on my tanks.

i will be running t5 fixtures on both tanks.

also, does a chiller have to run all the time? or can it be hooked up to a controller as well?

Chillers either come with on-board temerpature controllers or external controllers. They work just like the Fridge or AC unit. The Controller cycles the chiller on and off to maintain the temperature that you set the controller to.
As far as whether they are necessary, thats an individual answer. If you cant maintain a low enough temperature no matter what you do with other cooling methods, then yes, a chiller would pretty much be necessary to keep the temperature down if all else fails.
