maxijet or rio

so I just bought a new skimmer (Aqua C Remora) came with a rio 800. I had a 1 year old maxijet 1200 from my last skimmer that I was going to use in place of the rio but did not.

My question is do pumps lose power as they get old. I thought the brand new rio 800 would probably be the better choice over my used maxijet. But I have the maxijet just sitting on a table I could toss it in. not sure which would be best.

if you keep mantiance on them they will work almost the same as when you first bought them but yes as they get older they do ware out and stuff like that. If you liked you maxijet and you would like it to work as it did when you bought it you could always replace the impeler but if you have the rio just use that they are good pumps.

???Unless Rio has changed their design I would avoid it, personally. The are notorious for not restarting after power interruptions. I have never had that problem with any Maxijet, used or new. Use the old maxijet.

a few years back there were horror stories about rios giving out, cracking open and poisoning tanks. perhaps they've addressed that issue by now. I just use my old rio for mixing salt at this point. an mj1200 powers my skimmer
