adding rock
if my sand bed is pretty deep (5-6") and producing nitrogen bubbles, is it safe to stuff baserock down into the sand? I'm afraid of the anaerobic bacteria dying off but i want to build up my rock a little.

If you have 5"-6" sand bed. It is a DSB. You can add 1 or 2 pieces at a time and wait for it to cycle out. Your DSB should cycle any critters you disturb by covering them with a rock. Just make sure it is in place securely and will not shift if you put another rock on top.

my original baserock is already under the sand. i want to add more, so i cannot put the rock on top of the sand for fear of it falling over if the sand comes out from under it.

Just move aside the sand. That area of the bed will stop doing denitrification, but that's okay.
