Can it be saved?
Hi...
I ordered about 1/2 lb. of red Ogo (Gracilaria) macroalgae to keep in my refugium and to feed my tangs. The company I get it from is fantastic and shipped it on time and as promised. The problem is with the friggen fraggin razza frazzin Fed Ex service who (and this isn't the first time this has happened to us), didn't deliver it when it was supposed to be delivered. When I opened the box/bags this stuff stank to high heaven. I notified IPSF (where I got it)....and they are wonderful and are going to send me another shipment. I currently have this Ogo in a bucket with a powerhead running for the time being. I tested the water today and the Ammonia and Nitrites are WAY up there. The funny thing is....it doesn't ALL look bad. Alot of it is still nice and red, but there are some bleached out looking strands too. My question is.....can any of it be salvaged? I hate to throw it all away. Can I just keep this stuff in the bucket and keep testing and will the ammonia/nitrites eventually come down? Will any of it still be good? Or should I just scrap this batch and wait till the next shipment comes? Oh yeah...and does anybody know how to file a complaint against Fed EX? M

I'd try lighting it and seeing how the alga recovers. Depending on how cold the room is, a heater might help. Or you could throw a tiny bit to the tangs and see whether they eat it.

If you remove dead/rotting parts, it's possible the good parts will be able to recover.
The sender should be able to get a refund on the shipping if it wasn't delivered on time. I know when I send something out FedEx and it is delivered a day late FedEx doesn't charge me. I think only the sender can claim, unless it was sent using your FedEx account.

Thanks guys....
I think I will try to see if I can salvage some of it. I know from past experience that the tangs really like this stuff....and whats funny is my Royal Gramma's like it too! I will pick through it and pull off anything that looks "dead" or bleached out. I have extra heaters laying around...so I'll throw one of those in, stick a clip-on lamp over it......do a couple of water changes and see what happens. I did tell the guy at IPSF that they might want to pursue it with Fed Ex. It's kind of scary the thought that the box was sitting around in a warehouse for goodness knows how long. It's been up in the 90's here in the Northeast lately. Thank goodness it wasn't a shipment of any live fish! M
