screen on hydor koralia
This morning my sailfin tang was stuck to the side of my hydor pump dead. What type of screen can I attach to it to prevent this and how would I attach it? Anyone else have this problem? I love this type of pump because regular powerheads don't attach to my acrylic and this one can be placed in deep places because my tank is rather deep. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your fish. It most likely died of other causes and then got stuck to the powerhead. The powerheads we use do not have enough suction to hold anything but the weakest of animals. A healthy tang, or just about any fish for that matter, should have more than enough strength to pull itself away from the powerhead.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Do you have the Koralia in a wavemaker? I read somewhere that a representative from Hydor suggested not to installl these pumps in a wavemaker because this kind of accidents could happen unless you are using a Seio wavemaker which does not turn off the pumps completely but lowers the speed instead. I also heard they are working on their own controller that should be out by the end of the year.

This is the 3rd fish that has died from it being sucked to it. The other ones were a royal gramma and a chromis. They have all been very healthy up to that point. I didn't think the tang would get stuck because he was bigger (although not full grown.) No, it's not hooked to a wavemaker. It is the kind that has a magnet on the outside of the tank and you place it where you need water movement. Awesome invention in my eyes because of the acrylic.

You must have something else going on in your tank. I have a smallish maroon clown that practically lives in the back corner right next to the Koralia 3. He never gets close to being stuck to it. Dont want to argue but something else must be killing or severly weaking your fish first. Some fish maladys can pop up seemingly without warning.
Regarding the wavemaker, he was asking if you had the Koralia on a wavemaker to control it. Shutting down the koralias all the way would allow the fish to get inside wher ethe prop is and get chopped up. Plus they dont run well on wavemakers because of start up clatter. Yes, I understand yours are getting stuck to the sides. |

No, I don't have it hooked to a wavemaker, but that is good info to know. It is so strange, maybe it is some malady that pops up. DarG do you have anemones? I was wondering if they would get sucked onto the pump. I don't have a reef tank yet, but am working on it. Thanks for the replies.

My 90 is still a work in progress. My last reef I didnt have the koralia pumps. I used a closed loop so I dont know about the Koralias and anemones but I havent heard any issues and alot of people have the Korlaias or Tunze nanos.

I have 5 HK in my tank of different sizes, 3-1's and 2-2's on a wave maker, I have not lost any fish to them, the smallest fish I have are 3 Chromies about an inch long. I think there are other issues in your tank, What size HK are you running!!
