Questions - Mag 9.5 & Berlin skimmer

These are separate questions, I'm not using these two together.

Mag 9.5 - This pump is to be my return from my sump. I tried to control this electronically without success. I was thinking of putting a valve on it to restrict the flow but was worried about the extra wear this will place on pump. How much will I shorten the life of this pump by restricting the flow?

I know I could put a tee on the line with one part going back to the sump and control that with a valve. However, I would prefer to avoid the extra plumbing if at all possible.

Berlin Skimmer - I wanted to see what the best water depth is for this skimmer? I think I saw 9" somewhere but cannot recall where.
