Question QT - Hypo with Sand

i just upgraded to a larger QT tank which has dead sand and dead rock in it. it has just finished the cycle and im ready to get my next group of fish for QT and hypo before adding them to my display. the reason im using sand in the tank is because im wanting to add a pair of jawfish to my display tank.

anyways...my question is how can i keep the sandbed clean without having a clean up crew? will i just have to run the tank for 6-8 weeks of hypo and hope the waste doesnt build up too much? are there any inverts that are safe to add if im going to be doing hypo such as crabs or shrimps? maybe something that can survive in brakish water? is there a fish that eats waste from the sandbed? any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated!
thanks
josh

I've heard suggested that rather than the whole bottom with sand, to fill a cup or flower pot full and lay it on it's side, then you can take it out when not needed or clean it easily.

Why hypo if they're not sick?

No inverts will survive hyposalinity.

However, it shouldn't be that difficult to keep the tank clean. Don't overfeed. If you see stuff on the sand you want to clean up, you can siphon it out.

If you only have 2 fish in the QT, you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Best of luck,

Roy

i guess that is what i will have to do. once the tank is back to normal salinity i can always add a cleanup crew for a week or so then get my next round of fish to QT and remove the inverts.

I had a hermit survive hypo. He was in there because he was a snail killer, so I didn't want him in my display tank.

I made the mistake of running a QT with sand, and will never do it again. It removed the option of using copper, and in general I think it was a bad idea. The fish came down with ich, and the substrate gave the ich another place to hide in.

Normally, you don't want sand or rocks in your QT.

PVC sections are used for the fish to hide in.

Best of luck,

Roy

i agree. i have never done rock or sand in QT before, but i thought it would be necessary in order to QT jawfish. am i not correct? would they be fine in a bottomless tank with just PVC and clay pots? i dont want to cause them any extra stress. thanks

Like stated above just fill up a small container with sand. They will find it and they stay around it.
