Using a canister filter as a gravel cleaner?

Has anyone had any luck using a canister filter on a reef tank specifically as a gravel/sandbed cleaner? If so, what kind of media should be used? I have an old Hydor Prime 30 (Proquatics 2400 - identical device) with no media in it currently, and thought it perhaps would allow me to clean the crushed coral substrate without losing water in the process.

Thoughts?
