better water flow?

Hey all maybe you alll can give me some Ideas.My tank is 48x30w x24h acrylic with a center dual 1.5 overflow and four holes on top for returns.I am currently running a Mag18 with an OM 4way as my only water flow.
My question is would it be better to slow the return from the sump down and install a closed loop with a SCWD in the 3 remaing holes?I dont want to drill more holes and am trying to avoid power heads if possible.
My current system is doing fine I just think it could be better as the tank is 30" wide.
