Fuge lights, how long are they on?
I just got done setting up a fuge on my 10gal. and want to use a reverse lighting schedule to help w/ my pH swings. I'm not really sure how long to leave them on. My display lights are on from 5:00pm to 12:00am. What times should I have my fuge lights come? How do you guys/girls have your's setup? TIA.

I would leave them on for the exact opposite of your main tank.

hello
recom leaving them on a reverse photo period that is opposite the time you have your main tank lites on... if you want to benefit the PH in your tank might try having the fuge lites stay on for an hour or so AFTER your main lites come on during the day (your display on at 5pm, fuge off at say 6pm 1 hour later)... then have your fuge lites go go on an hour or BEFORE you shut your main lites off at nite.... it might even be better to have them come on 2 hours+ before you shut your lites off at nite... i dont know what the current thinking is (+/-) but some people leave them on 24/7... as part of my system is attached a `50gal display fuge and the lites are set on the same timer as the main 125 display lites... that is they come on and stay on the same photoperiod as the main tank... i have a lot of xenia, dsb, and macro etc in this fuge... also connected to same system is a 36gal sump/fuge this one i keep more or less on a 24 hour liting cycle w/ macroalgae (no timer used on these lites)... if i am home or when i remember i might shut the lites off (in the fuge) during the daytime then turn them on again at nite before the main lites go out... mainly though they are on 24/7 (not very hi tech or sophisticated on this side of things)... nothing fancy... but always on a REVERSE PHOTO PERIOD... if not 24 hour cycle i cannot seem to raise my nitrates no matter how hard i try... (my phosphates admittedly are another issue though! = lack of flow for the first few mos tank set up = major detritus buiild up in dsb = getting phosph reactor to get phosph down to manageable levels!) good luck and regards! oh btw check out melevs site (search rc for link address) for an excellent LOW COST liting option for the fuge... i am using his recom bulbs which only cost 10-12$ and they work great |

Ronan021: Thanks for all the info. Melev's site is full of info and I have a similar light on the fuge now thanks to his research.
