water changes and RoE.

My rate of evaporation is about half a gallon to a gallon a day. (That is with PC lights I imagine if i get MH it could be more than that.)

I figure Im doing more than 5% water change, every week, from the daily top off of fresh RO/DI water. My question is this...Due to this rate of Evaporation: Do I still have to do a weekly regular water change of 5% salt water?

Eric.

Yes. It replenishes the nutrients that your corals need from the salt you add to the changing water. Plus removing old water gives the fishes and corals fresh water. Remember that they are swimming and drinking their own waste... My corals always seem to perk up nicely just after a water change. I think it makes them happy.

When water evaporates, the only thing that leaves the tank is water. Evaporation doesn't remove nitrates, organic wastes or any of the other pollutants in the tank.

So yes, you still need to do weekly water changes.

thanks. I thought that heavy skimming and top of water would do the trick. I will do a water change asap. It has been two weeks.

Eric.
