I have a 14g biocube that has no skimmer. The tank is 9 months old and nitrates are always at zero(or pretty darn close) I do water changes every two to three week not to lower trates but more so to replace essential elements and calcium for my coral.
Most people would say my tank is overcrowded with 4 fish (actually so would I ) but after I lost 2 fish and bought two more I found the missing fish in the back chamber. I planned on returning two but they are all doing very well and it has been 7 months.

Are skimmers a good Idea? Yes!
Are they neccesary? Not in my tank so far!

Porthios, I checked out that thread of yours, very nice tank. Crammed with corals! You sure do know a lot about macro!

Kingfisher, that is a sweet nano, looks like you have good growth. That yellow watchman is huge! None of those fish really put a high bio load on the tank... well maybe that watchman! Buat that's still not much.

I plan on having 6 fish in my 40 breeder...

flame angel
mandarine goby
true perc
black perc
purple fire fish
neon goby

I figure the neon, purple and mandarine really don't put that much waste out at all, so really the only heavy bio's I have in the tank are the flame and the two clowns.

I'm going to have a good sized clean up crew too though. Orange linckia, pink cucumber, lotso crabs, hermits, a couple of turbos, and a good dozen or so nassarius snails to keep my sand bed looking shiny!

this was early may, i'll try to post a newer pic. (i'm having a hard time removing coralline algae from the front glass)

it'll be 2 years old in october, I see new polyps growing from my acans every month.

my zoos and actinos spread like hell. (grew out from a small bunch of polyps.)

every 2-3 months, something spawns, and i still don't know what these are. (taken february '07)

Its important to note that the corals I choose to keep are well suited for this type of set-up. [/B][/QUOTE]

Agree!!. If you have a 100gallon sps tank and going skimless it makes no sense at all.. coral choice is the key!
