You're talking about cleaning two different parts of the tank.

The goby will sift through the sand all day long, while the blenny will eat algae off glass, rocks, powerheads, etc. Only time blenny's go to the sand is to actually eat some to help with digesting algae.

As far as food/resources go, Snowboarda42 is right- they have different diets and will have pretty different behavior. You could have both in a tank if you wanted- the only caution with that is many times the sandsifter gobies starve to death over the course of a few months unless they are in a very large, very mature tank. They clean the sand too quickly for their own good. Youve got the big tank part down, but your sig. says its only been up a few months- I would skip him for now and stick with the blenny.

Because that type of goby almost never accepts aquarium food- they rely on a build up of debris and edible stuff down in the sand bed to feed on. Once theyve cleaned that out, they slowly starve. On rare occasions youll get one to take brine or mysis or something, but thats not something to depend on. Basically- your tank is probably too clean to sustain one long term right now. Crap it up a little first- lol

well, its more detritus than diatoms. if you have a really heavy fish load, its possible that you have enough in there, Im just saying its unlikely that you have enough of the correct types of food is all.

Yeah, thats true. Most diamond gobies die of starvation. Kind sucks.

A yellow watchman goby is more colorful, will clean sand, and will eat pellet or mysis quite happily. Pair him with a tiger pistol shrimp and you'll be endlessly entertained. The shrimp digs, and they live together.

yellow watchman's don't clean though, they eat mostly from the water column.
