Do you wash out carbon before putting in in the tank?

If so, is it okay to wash it out with tap water?

Yes, always rinse it, you'll be amazed at how much black sludge will come out of it. I just use a bucket of tank water when I do a water change to rinse it in.

Okay, thanks for the info. I did not rinse it out the first time I changed the carbon last month, is this harmful for the tank?

can actually be harmful to the tank.

The powder reside can suffocate some animals and the other issue is oxygen saturation.

Fresh carbon needs to saturate with oxygen before going in the tank. A good 5-10 minute soak after rinsing in RO/DI should do just fine. You may see some posts about carbon affecting PH, this is the reason
