Will a Eheim 2227 Wet Dry full of rubble Live Rock work? or will it increase Nitrate

I am starting a 83 gl reef tank with a plenum in the bottom, a small CPR Aquafuge as refugium, 120 pounds of Live Rock, 2x250 WattsMH lights, 4x65 Watts Actinics and 4 Moon Lights. I will be ussing 4 Koralia 4 Powerheads (1200 gph) with a eave timer to create intense tubulence.
Now here comes the interesting part. I kind of jumped the gun before reading "Natural Reef Aquarium" and went and bought a Eheim 2227 Wet Dry Canister Filter. Now it is outdated because it accumulates Nitrates. So what I am planning on doing if filling the chambers of the 2227 with rubble Live Rock and operating it this way. What is your opinion on this? Has it being done? Will it create more Nitrate?
